Educational Development

The Jeanne Anne Noble Delta GEMS (Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully) – targets young women between the ages of 14 and 18 to realize their aspirations and dreams by providing tools that enable participants to enhance their skills to achieve high levels of academic success, assist in proper goal setting, decision making, and planning for their futures. Activities and events such as career and college planning, managing your budget, conflict resolution, and the College Tours are designed to create compassionate, caring, community-minded young women by actively involving them in self-development and service-learning.

The Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy – provides an opportunity for chapters to collaborate with or work independently on education programs for young women between the ages of 11 and 14. The Portsmouth Alumnae Chapter models the 5-point program, focusing on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) related curriculum to mentor, education, and deliver service learning to our participants. Activities such as self-esteem workshops, STEM, the annual Kwanzaa presentation, the career speakers’ bureau, our mommy and me tea (etiquettes workshop), and College Tours help young women develop the foundational attributes necessary to excel both personally and professionally.

EMBODI (Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence) - The EMBODI program addresses issues that prevent our African American Male youth from reaching their fullest potential educationally, socially, and emotionally. In collaboration with other groups such as Fraternities, Civic Organizations, and mentoring programs, EMBODI conducts workshops, seminars, interactive activities, and service-learning to create a dialogue for positive interaction and community exchange.
